How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Troveology starts with one question: will this product suit the places you want to hunt, your budget and a first hunt?

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with weight and ease of use

Metal detectors differ in weight, coil size and how many settings a new user has to learn. We check the weight, the shaft, the control box and whether the maker gives a simple starting mode.

We also note the frequency and coil type each maker lists.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the ground and target settings, the discrimination modes, the batteries, headphone options and the warranty terms the maker lists. For waterproof models, we repeat exactly what the maker says is waterproof, the coil only or the whole detector.

When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a detector. We look for patterns, like a heavy shaft, confusing menus or a coil cable that wears.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A light detector that's great for a first hunt may score lower in a guide for beach detecting.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers also retire model names and change kits, so we check each model before we write about it.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every detector we cover.

We don't promise what any detector will find. Depth figures are the maker's claims, because soil and targets change the result.

Rules for metal detecting differ by park, beach and historic site, so ask the land owner or the local authority before you detect or dig. Our guides are not legal advice.

Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. For setup and care, follow the maker's steps.
